How to Start a Laundry Business in Nigeria (2026)
Five business models, the real cost drivers (power first), pricing per item, and when laundry software is worth paying for
Written by a Nigerian software company that builds laundry POS and pickup apps — so we will also tell you when you do not need one yet.
How to Start a Laundry Business in Nigeria: The Short Answer
To start a laundry business in Nigeria, choose one model (walk-in dry cleaner, pickup and delivery, campus, hotel contracts or self-service), register with the CAC, solve power and water first, buy commercial-grade washers, dryers and irons, price per item, tag every garment and collect payment before release. Software can wait until volume grows.
Most guides start with the washing machine. We start with what decides whether a Nigerian laundry survives its first year: power, garment care and getting paid. Operators interviewed by the business press keep naming the same problems: fuel costs, staff who leave or damage clothes, and customers who take clean clothes on credit and never pay.
We build laundry POS and pickup apps, but we won't tell you to buy software on day one. A single shop runs well on numbered tags, a receipt book, a POS terminal and the free WhatsApp Business app. Custom software earns its cost when you add branches, riders or corporate accounts; our prices are in the cost section.

Five Laundry Business Models in Nigeria (Pick One First)
Each model needs different equipment, staff and software. Doing all five at once spreads a small budget too thin.
1. Walk-in laundry and dry cleaner
A shop on a busy street or plaza. Revenue comes from dry cleaning suits, native wear and dresses, plus wash-and-iron. It needs a visible location and strong pressing skills; rent and an all-day generator are the risks.
2. Pickup and delivery
You collect from homes and offices and return clothes clean, so a cheaper back-office unit works. ThisDay reported in June 2026 that Abuja's Ultra Servicare offers free pickup and drop-off. The risk is the rider: fuel, road safety and lost bags.
3. Campus and hostel laundry
Students want cheap, predictable wash-and-fold, often by the bag. Volume is high, margins are thin and demand follows the term calendar, so you need efficient machines and simple payment.
4. Hotel and corporate contracts
Hotels, short-lets, clinics, gyms and restaurants send linen and uniforms in bulk. They expect agreed turnaround, item counts per batch and monthly invoices. Late payment is the main risk.
5. Self-service laundromat
Customers use your machines themselves. It depends on cheap, constant power and water, which makes it the hardest model to run profitably on a generator. Most new operators start with a service model instead.
Which one first?
Pressing skills and a good street: walk-in. A reliable rider and an online following: pickup and delivery. Add hotel and corporate contracts once turnaround and item tracking are dependable.
How to Start a Laundry Business in Nigeria: 9 Steps
1. Learn the trade first
Stain removal, care labels and pressing native wear are skills. BusinessDay has profiled CleanAce Academy, which teaches dry-cleaning, laundry and finishing techniques; one Ibadan founder told The Guardian she learnt from an established operator in three weeks.
2. Choose your model and area
Count the offices, estates, hostels, hotels and dry cleaners nearby. Ask what competitors charge and what customers complain about. Your offer should fix one of those complaints.
3. Register the business
Register a business name or company with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), open a business account and ask an accountant about tax. Signage, trade permits and wastewater rules vary by state, so check with your local government and state environmental agency before signing a lease.
4. Solve power before buying machines
Washers, dryers, boilers and irons are heavy loads. Cost your power per day — grid, generator, solar hybrid or a mix — before you buy anything.
5. Sort out water and drainage
Most operators need a borehole and tank plus somewhere for wastewater to go. Dirty or hard water stains whites and shortens machine life, so add filtration.
6. Buy equipment that fits the model
Commercial machines cost more than domestic ones but survive daily use. Confirm local spare parts and a technician first, especially for imported second-hand machines.
7. Hire and train a small team
The Ibadan founder ran with four employees: two pressers, a washerwoman and a delivery man. Train everyone on garment handling, tagging and customer care.
8. Set prices and policies
Publish a price list, express surcharge, pickup fee or minimum order, damage policy, unclaimed-items rule and a clear payment rule. Show it at the counter and on WhatsApp.
9. Launch with tags and records
Every garment gets a tag number tied to a customer, a ticket and a photo. Then market to the estates and offices you mapped.
Power and Water: The Cost That Decides Your Margin
Power sinks more laundries than anything else, and fuel prices swing hard: the National Bureau of Statistics put the average retail price of diesel at ₦3,277.47 per litre in May 2026, up 86.40% from ₦1,758.26 a year earlier (Legit.ng, reporting NBS data). A price list set when fuel was cheaper can turn loss-making within months.
Operators have said this for years. Two founders told BusinessDay in 2017 that 50 percent of their costs went on diesel for their washing machines, and a Lagos dry cleaner running a 200KVA generator and three others told the paper in 2014 that the cost of fuelling and maintaining them was high.
- Check the grid first. Confirm your DisCo band and real hours of supply at the address before you sign. A cheaper shop with poor supply can cost more overall.
- Size the generator to the load. Get an electrician to list every machine's rating.
- Batch heavy work into full loads during your best power hours, and press in blocks.
- Use solar where it fits. Solar with batteries can carry lighting, the POS and some irons; dryers and steam boilers usually still need grid or generator power. Our solar business guide explains sizing.
- Review prices against fuel and detergent costs every month or quarter.
Laundry Equipment Checklist
We don't print equipment prices: they move with the naira and every shipment, so get three current quotes.
- Washing and drying: commercial washer-extractors, tumble dryers, sorting tables, a spotting station, and drying racks as back-up when power is short.
- Finishing: industrial steam irons, ironing tables (vacuum tables if you can), a steam boiler, and a press if volume allows.
- Dry cleaning (optional): a machine and solvent. Ask exactly which solvent a machine uses: perchloroethylene (perc), the traditional one, is on a 10-year US EPA phase-out from dry cleaning (a rule the agency has been reconsidering since July 2025), so be wary of old imported perc machines.
- Packing: hangers, garment bags, tags, a tag gun and receipt books.
- Power, water and sales: generator or solar, voltage protection, borehole, pump, filtration, a POS terminal and a phone for WhatsApp orders.
- A technician you trust. Launching the dry cleaners' association in 2023, its chairman listed "unscrupulous suppliers and vendors as well as unprofessional engineers" among the industry's problems.
What It Costs to Start a Laundry Business (and the Software)
There is no honest single figure: a hostel wash-and-fold service and a dry cleaner with a boiler and a van are different businesses. Quote each category for your own plan.
| Cost category | What is in it | How to estimate it |
|---|---|---|
| Premises | Rent, deposit, fees, renovation, plumbing, wiring | Quotes for two or three shops |
| Machines | Washers, dryers, irons, boiler, dry-cleaning machine | Three supplier quotes, installed |
| Power | Generator or solar, fuel, servicing, grid bills | Machine ratings × hours × current fuel price |
| Water | Borehole, tank, pump, filtration, drainage | Driller and plumber quotes |
| Supplies | Detergents, stain removers, hangers, bags, tags | Usage per load × loads per week |
| People and delivery | Pressers, washers, front desk, rider, motorcycle, insurance | Local wages and trips per day |
| Registration | CAC, permits, signage | Official fees plus professional fees |
| Working capital | Cash until revenue settles | A few months of running costs |
When you are ready for software, these are our typical ranges. A fixed quote follows a free scoping call.
| Musskart laundry software | What is included | Typical price | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laundry POS + order-tracking web app | Order intake with tags or barcodes, intake photos, price list, receipts, payments, order status, automatic customer notifications, unpaid and unclaimed reports, staff roles, multi-branch ready | ₦2.5M – ₦4M | 4–6 weeks |
| Customer pickup/delivery app + rider app + admin | Everything above plus a customer app to book pickups and pay, a rider app with routes and proof of delivery, subscriptions, corporate accounts and an admin dashboard | ₦4M – ₦8M | 8–12 weeks |
Hosting, SMS, WhatsApp Business Platform messages (Meta bills them by message category), payment-gateway fees and app store accounts are billed by those providers. See our app development cost guide for how budgets are built.
How to Price Laundry Services: Per Item, Per Kg or Subscription
Price from your costs — power, water, detergent, labour, packaging, delivery — then add margin. Expect push-back: two founders told BusinessDay that many clients still wanted low rates despite their professional service.
- Per item for dry cleaning and ironing: shirts, suits, native wear, duvets, curtains.
- Per kg or per bag for wash-and-fold; you need a scale at intake.
- Monthly plans paid in advance for office workers and corporate clients.
- Surcharges for express, heavy stains, delicate fabrics and out-of-zone pickups.
Get paid before clothes leave. A Shomolu dry cleaner told BusinessDay in 2023: "Some of these office people make month-end promises that they do not redeem, and cart off with their clean clothes." Take payment at drop-off or before release; give credit only to corporate clients with a signed agreement.
Customer Care, Damage and Trust
Damage disputes can turn ugly: BusinessDay's 2021 profile of CleanAce's founder describes customers who sometimes locked up the staff when a garment was damaged. Prevent the dispute before it starts.
- Photograph at intake. Lagos operator Laundry House told BusinessDay it photographs clothes before washing and sends the pictures to the customer, so existing faults are on record.
- Refuse risky items in writing after reading the care label.
- Print a damage and loss policy on the receipt, with a time limit for claims.
- Message customers when an order is ready, and ask for feedback after each job.
- Keep customer records in the business, not on a staff member's phone — staff moving between dry cleaners is an old industry problem.
Laundry Software: When a Notebook Is Enough and When It Isn't
For one shop, tags, a receipt book, a POS terminal and the free WhatsApp Business app go a long way. The app gives you a business profile, greeting and away messages, quick replies, labels to sort chats ("ready", "unpaid") and a catalogue of services with prices. Off-the-shelf laundry apps are another option.
Custom software pays for itself when you run two or more branches, do pickup and delivery with several riders, serve hotels and corporate accounts that need item counts and monthly invoices, sell subscriptions, or want your own branded app.
The features that matter: tag or barcode printing per garment, intake photos, pickup scheduling, automatic "received", "ready" and "out for delivery" messages, payments through your own Paystack or Flutterwave account, a counter POS screen, a rider app, and daily reports on unpaid orders and unclaimed garments. Automated WhatsApp messages from your own system run on Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform, not the free app.
