On building a general job board. Jobberman owns generalist recruitment search in Nigeria, alongside MyJobMag, Hot Nigerian Jobs and the international boards. Competing on "jobs in Lagos" is not a realistic plan for a new entrant and we will not pretend otherwise. What does work is being narrow enough that the generalists cannot serve the segment well: one profession (healthcare, tech, teaching, accounting), one employer type (NGOs and donor programmes, the public sector, oil and gas contractors), blue-collar and vocational roles where CVs barely exist, diaspora and remote roles paying in dollars, or verified-employer-only boards in a market where recruitment scams are endemic.
The Nigerian Problem: Volume
An entry-level role advertised in Nigeria can attract several thousand applications in a week. Most of the applicants are not remotely qualified, many are applying to everything indiscriminately, and a human being cannot read four thousand CVs. So what actually happens is that the first two hundred get looked at and the rest are never opened, which is bad for the employer and worse for the candidate who was a genuine fit at number 1,800.
This is the problem an ATS built for Nigeria has to solve, and it is not the problem international products are designed around.
CV parsing that copes with real CVs
Nigerian CVs arrive as PDFs, Word files, scanned images and photographs taken on a phone. They use inconsistent date formats, list NYSC and institutions in a hundred different ways, and often bury the relevant experience on page three. We build parsing tuned for this: extraction of education, institution, class of degree, NYSC status, years of experience, skills and certifications, with a confidence score and a review queue rather than silent misreading.
Screening that is defensible
Knockout questions answered at application, ranking against explicit criteria the employer defines, and bulk actions across hundreds of candidates at once. Crucially, every rejection records which criterion it failed. Automated filtering that cannot explain itself is both a fairness problem and a business risk, and it is how good candidates disappear silently.
Assessments before interviews
Short skills tests, situational judgement or work samples sent automatically to candidates who pass the first screen, scored automatically where possible. This cuts an unmanageable pile to a shortlist far more reliably than reading CVs does, and it surfaces capable people whose CVs are badly written — which in this market is a lot of them.
Interviews and pipeline
Scheduling with candidate self-selection from available slots, panel coordination, structured scorecards so feedback is comparable instead of impressionistic, video interview links, and a pipeline view per role. Offer management with approval chains, and handover into onboarding.
Job Board Specifics
Employer verification, not optional
Recruitment scams are endemic in Nigeria, and a board that lets anyone post is complicit in them. CAC verification, domain-verified email, a manual review on the first posting, and a visible verified badge. Candidate reporting with de-listing that actually happens. In this market, being the board that does not host scams is a genuine differentiator you can market.
No upfront fees from candidates, ever
Any job requiring a candidate to pay for training, medicals, forms or registration before employment should be blocked at posting and reported. Build the rule into the platform rather than into a policy page.
Search and alerts
By role, location, salary band, experience level, sector and work arrangement, with saved searches and alerts by email and WhatsApp. Salary shown wherever you can persuade employers to publish it — boards that show pay get far better applicant quality because unsuitable candidates self-select out.
Monetisation
Pay-per-post, employer subscriptions with posting allowances, featured and promoted listings, CV database access, and employer branding pages. Recurring billing through Paystack with self-service upgrades. Expect to give posting away early to build liquidity, then charge for promotion first and subscriptions later.
The mobile reality
Most Nigerian jobseekers use a phone with limited data. Lightweight pages, apply-with-saved-profile in two taps, WhatsApp alerts rather than email, and a CV builder for candidates who do not have a decent one. That last feature drives more registrations than any amount of marketing.
Recruitment Agencies
If you place candidates for a fee, your platform is a different animal again: a candidate database is your main asset, and client relationships are your revenue.
- Candidate database with real searchability — skills, experience, sector, salary expectation, availability and placement history, searchable across every CV you have ever received rather than only current applicants.
- Client and vacancy management with the terms of business, fee percentage, rebate period and exclusivity recorded per client, so nobody negotiates from memory.
- Submission tracking — which candidate went to which client, when, and what happened. This is also your protection when a client hires someone you introduced six months earlier and forgets where they came from.
- Placement and commission with invoicing on start date, rebate liability tracked through the guarantee period, and consultant commission calculated automatically.
- Contract and outsourced staff where you supply staff on your own books: timesheets, approvals, margin per placement, and the payroll link.
A regulatory flag worth raising. Operating as a recruitment or employment agency, and particularly outsourcing or supplying labour, can engage licensing and registration requirements under Nigerian labour regulation, and charging candidates fees is restricted. Musskart builds software and holds no employment-agency licence; the permissions and compliance are yours. If you are supplying staff on your own payroll, note that it also brings you squarely into PAYE and pension obligations — see HR and payroll software for Nigeria.

Candidate data is regulated data. A recruitment platform holds names, contact details, employment history, education records and sometimes identity documents for thousands of people, which makes you a data controller of major importance under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, with NDPC registration and an annual compliance audit. Candidates have a right to see and delete their data, CVs cannot be retained indefinitely without a basis, and sharing a candidate's details with a client needs a lawful basis. We build the consent capture, retention rules and deletion endpoints into the product — see NDPA compliance audit and CAR filing.
