Asset Finance, Hire Purchase & BNPL Platform Development in Nigeria
Financing portals for lenders and merchants selling phones, solar systems, vehicles and home improvement
Application and KYC, credit decisions, direct-debit repayments, lawful collections and funder reporting — for licensed lenders and the merchants who sell through them. Typical builds ₦8M–₦20M.
How Much Does an Asset Finance or BNPL Platform Cost in Nigeria?
A merchant financing portal MVP typically costs ₦8M–₦12M and takes 3–4 months. A full lender platform — credit decisioning, repayments, collections, a merchant network and investor reporting — runs ₦12M–₦20M over 4–7 months. Enterprise multi-product builds with device-lock and partner APIs are quoted after scoping, from ₦20M. The lending licence always stays with the lender.
This page is for licensed lenders, car hire purchase companies, and merchants that sell phones, solar systems, vehicles and home-improvement goods on credit through a lending partner.
Start with the honest bit. Most merchants should not lend from their own balance sheet. A phone shop or solar installer that wants to sell on instalments usually does better partnering with a licensed lender that books the loan, while the merchant sells and delivers. What you need is a portal that connects the two — not your own bank. Your lawyer confirms which licences apply to your model.
Asset Finance and BNPL Platform Pricing (Typical Ranges)
| Scope | What it usually includes | Typical price | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merchant financing portal MVP | Application and KYC, one or two products, merchant portal, rules-based decisions, one repayment rail, lender admin | ₦8M – ₦12M | 3–4 months |
| Full lender platform | Credit decisioning, repayments on several rails, collections, merchant network and settlement, investor reporting | ₦12M – ₦20M | 4–7 months |
| Enterprise multi-product platform | Several asset classes and lenders, device-lock and telematics partners, partner APIs, white-label | Quoted after scoping (from ₦20M) | Set at scoping |
A fixed quote follows a free scoping call. Third-party costs are billed by the provider or regulator and are excluded: KYC per-check fees, credit-bureau reports, payment fees, device-lock or tracker fees, messaging, hosting, licences and FCCPC fees. If you only need a loan app without the merchant and asset layer, see our loan app development page.
Who Needs an Asset Finance Platform
Licensed lenders and MFBs
Banks, microfinance banks and finance companies wanting a merchant channel: point-of-sale applications, fast decisions and repayments pulled on the due date.
Car hire purchase companies
Vehicle financiers who need VIN capture, insurance and tracker records, deposit and tenor rules, and repossession steps logged against each agreement.
Phone, laptop and solar merchants
Sellers offering instalments without lending their own money. The item is released only after the lending partner approves and the deposit clears.
Home-improvement and appliance sellers
Furniture, appliance and building-materials vendors financing larger baskets over longer tenors, with settlement from lender to merchant.
CREDICORP in 2026: Where Consumer Credit Is Flowing
The Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) describes itself as a development finance institution of the Federal Government with one mandate: widening access to consumer credit for Nigeria's working population. It works through participating financial institutions (PFIs) — the lenders that book the loans — and through vendors and manufacturers.
300,000+

₦45.2bn+

500,000

40%+
first-time formal borrowers
- Reach. MSME Africa, reporting CREDICORP's 2026 Impact Report on 22 July 2026, says the programme has passed 300,000 beneficiaries, disbursed more than ₦45.2bn in the first half of 2026 and targets 500,000 by December 2026. More than 40% of beneficiaries are first-time formal borrowers.
- Priority assets. CREDICORP's focus areas are mobility (especially CNG and electric vehicles), digital devices, energy solutions (generators and solar panels), home improvement (furniture, appliances, building materials) and life essentials.
- Risk sharing. Nairametrics reported on 10 July 2026 that CREDICORP and NCGCL — a federal credit-risk company set up in 2025 with ₦100bn of initial capital — signed a memorandum under which NCGCL will provide partial credit cover on lending through CREDICORP's PFIs, with the two bodies jointly consolidating reporting on transactions from the PFI network.
- Speed. CREDICORP's public list of lenders advertises tenures of up to 24, 36 or 48 months and turnaround from about 15 minutes to 48 hours. If your partner promises 15 minutes, your merchant portal has to decide in minutes.
Musskart is not affiliated with CREDICORP or NCGCL and cannot arrange funding or eligibility; participating-lender status is between the lender and CREDICORP. We build the software: the application, decision, repayment and reporting trail a growing loan book needs.
What an Asset Finance and BNPL Platform Includes
Three surfaces share one loan ledger: a customer journey, a merchant portal and a lender back office.
Application and KYC
Online, in-store on an agent's tablet or from a merchant link. BVN and NIN checks run through licensed providers, with liveness for higher-value assets — see our KYC integration page.
Credit decisioning
Consented bank-statement analysis, reports from licensed bureaus such as CRC Credit Bureau, FirstCentral and CreditRegistry under the lender's own subscriptions, affordability caps and configurable rules. Every decision shows its reasons.
Asset catalogue and merchant portal
Cash price, deposit, tenors, fees and total cost per product, shown before acceptance. Merchants start applications, confirm delivery with serial, IMEI or VIN, and track settlement.
Repayment collection
Direct-debit mandates, saved cards, dedicated virtual accounts, USSD and agent cash. Every attempt is logged, retried on schedule and reconciled to the ledger.
Device locking via partners
Phones enrolled in a manufacturer's or specialist partner's lock service, token or remote lock for solar, trackers and immobilisers for vehicles. We integrate the partner's API and log every lock.
Collections and reporting
Reminders, grace periods, restructuring and early settlement — no contact harvesting or debt-shaming. Portfolio at risk, collection rates and vintage curves by merchant, exportable for funders.
Underneath: a double-entry ledger, idempotent payment handling (one payment, one credit, however many times a webhook fires), role-based access and an append-only audit trail. Device locks must be disclosed in the customer's agreement and used under a written policy your lawyer approves.
How Repayments Are Collected
Collections decide whether an asset finance book survives, so we combine rails that fail in different ways.
| Rail | How it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-debit mandate | The customer consents once and the lender debits their bank account on schedule. Paystack's Direct Debit, for example, is for businesses in Nigeria only and needs the customer's bank to be supported. | Bank coverage, set-up drop-off, failed-funds retries. |
| Saved card | After a first successful payment the gateway returns a reusable authorisation. Paystack notes local rules require two-factor authentication on that first card transaction. | Expired or replaced cards. |
| Dedicated virtual account | Each customer gets an account number; transfers into it post to that customer. On Paystack, financial-services businesses can issue these only to identity-validated customers. | Customers forgetting to pay — pair with reminders. |
| USSD, agents, cash | For customers without smartphones or steady data. | Receipts must post to the ledger in real time. |
Open-banking providers such as Mono also offer direct debit aimed at lenders and BNPL operators. Provider fees are billed to you directly.
The FCCPC DEON Regulations 2025: What They Change in the Software
The FCCPC's Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending (DEON) Regulations 2025 took effect on 21 July 2025. The FCCPC's announcement describes the scope as unsecured consumer lending through electronic, online, mobile or other non-traditional channels. Templars notes the regime covers loan apps, embedded credit, BNPL models and airtime/data lending, with a 5 January 2026 compliance deadline; Stren & Blan Partners, writing in BusinessDay, read it as covering secured and unsecured digital lending. Enforcement paused in April 2026 under a court order and resumed after the Federal High Court in Lagos upheld the regulations on 20 July 2026.
Whether your hire purchase or asset-backed product is in scope is a question for your lawyer. Building to the DEON standard is sensible either way.
| What the rules require (per source) | What the platform does |
|---|---|
| No pre-authorised or automatic lending (FCCPC) | Credit is created only after the customer applies and accepts. |
| Clear, accessible loan terms (FCCPC) | The offer shows deposit, interest, fees, schedule and total repayable; the accepted version is stored. |
| Joint registration of lender partnerships; FCCPC approval before new partnership agreements (FCCPC; Stren & Blan) | Merchant–lender partnerships are recorded, so you can show which merchants sell which lender's products. |
| Ethical recovery; abusive recovery and harassment targeted (FCCPC) | Collections stay with the borrower and consented channels; contact logs are auditable. |
| Compliance audit report and data protection impact assessment at approval; bi-annual reports (Stren & Blan) | Consent records, data inventory and report exports ready for your compliance team. |
| Fines up to ₦100 million or 1% of turnover; directors disqualified for up to five years (FCCPC) | An audit trail of who changed which rate, rule or message. |
Per Stren & Blan, licensed microfinance banks need an FCCPC waiver rather than full registration but still follow the pricing, conduct and data rules. The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, enforced by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, applies throughout. For registration steps, see loan app requirements.
Hire Purchase, BNPL or Asset-Backed Loan?
| Model | How it usually works | What the system must track |
|---|---|---|
| Hire purchase (cars, tricycles, generators) | The financier buys the asset; the customer pays instalments and ownership usually passes after the final payment. | Asset register, insurance, tracker, ownership status, repossession, transfer of title |
| BNPL at checkout (phones, appliances) | Deposit plus short instalments through a lender built into the merchant's checkout. | Fast decisions, merchant settlement, missed-payment handling |
| Asset-backed loan (vehicles) | The customer borrows against an asset they already own. | Collateral documents, valuation, lien records |
One legal detail matters for car financiers. Nigeria's Hire-Purchase Act (1965, in force from 1 October 1968) applies, on its own wording, to all hire-purchase and credit-sale agreements for motor vehicles whatever the price, but to other goods only up to ₦2,000 — a 1968 figure. So car hire purchase agreements sit within the Act, while most phone or solar plans are priced far above the old cap. Your lawyer specifies the agreement; we build the records.
Lending licences are a separate question. Law firms describe state money-lender licences (for example under the Lagos State Moneylenders Law), CBN licences for banks, microfinance banks and finance companies, and FCCPC oversight of digital lending on top. Our lending business guide covers the options.
Proof: The Elite Creed Vehicle-Lending Platform
Elite Creed is a live vehicle-backed lending platform Musskart designed and built: online applications, BVN and NIN checks through licensed providers, a credit-assessment workflow loan officers can explain, an encrypted document vault, Paystack and Flutterwave repayments reconciled against the loan ledger, an admin dashboard and an append-only audit trail. An asset finance platform reuses those foundations and adds the merchant layer. Dealers who also need stock and listings can pair it with our dealership software.
How We Build Your Platform
1. Free scoping call
We map your model, licence, lending partner, merchants and assets, then send a written scope and fixed quote.
2. Credit policy as configuration
Your credit team sets rules, limits, deposits, tenors and fees; we make them editable, not hard-coded.
3. Integrations
KYC provider, credit bureaus, payment rails and any device-lock or telematics partner you contract.
4. Two-week sprints
Working software demoed every two weeks, starting with the application, decision and ledger core.
5. Compliance review and pilot
Your lawyer reviews disclosures, agreements and collections scripts; we pilot with one merchant and one product.
6. Scale and support
Add merchants, products and rails, then keep the platform current under our maintenance and support service.
What We Will Not Build
- Lending products for unlicensed operators — we ask to see the lender's licence or licensed partnership.
- Contact-list harvesting, debt-shaming, or messages to a borrower's family or employer.
- Pre-approved loans pushed to people who did not apply, or fees hidden from the offer screen.
- Look-alike apps that imitate a bank, a government programme or CREDICORP itself.
