Investing Platforms Built for Nigeria's Licensed Capital Market Firms

Nigerian investors have moved their money onto their phones. Someone who once signed a mutual fund form in a branch now expects to open an account in five minutes, fund it by transfer, buy units before lunch and watch the position update that evening. Firms that offer that are gathering assets; firms still running on forms and spreadsheets are losing those clients to somebody else's app.

Musskart Technology Limited builds the platform that closes the gap — a registered Nigerian software company with 250+ delivered projects since 2020, engineering investment and wealth-management applications for the firms legally allowed to run them: SEC-licensed fund and portfolio managers, stockbrokers and dealing members, asset managers opening a retail channel, and robo-advisory founders building with a licensed partner.

What Kind of Investment Product Are You Launching?

"Investment app" covers several very different products, and the difference decides your architecture, partners and budget.

Local equities — NGX shares

Order entry and status, price and index data, corporate actions, dividend history and a clean portfolio view — routed to an NGX dealing-member broker (yours or a partner's), with holdings reflected in the CSCS depository.

Treasury bills and fixed income

Subscription flows for Nigerian Treasury bills, FGN Savings Bonds, commercial paper and fixed-income notes: minimum ladders, tenor, indicative yield, maturity calendar, rollovers and automatic maturity credit. Usually the fastest module to launch.

Mutual funds and collective schemes

Digital subscription and redemption for money market, fixed-income, balanced, equity, ethical and dollar funds — unit-level records, the right price per unit on each dealing day, holding periods, exit fees and contract notes. The classic mutual fund app development brief.

Dollar and offshore assets

US stocks, ETFs, Eurobonds and dollar funds through the licensed offshore broker-dealer you contract with: dollar wallet, funding and FX display, fractional shares, market hours, settlement, and one portfolio view across Naira and dollar holdings.

Robo-advisory and model portfolios

A risk questionnaire, a recommended model portfolio, automated contributions and periodic rebalancing to target weights. Your investment committee owns the models; we build the profiling engine, allocation logic, drift monitoring and the audit trail behind every switch.

Goal-based saving and investing

The Cowrywise, Bamboo and Risevest-style experience founders describe: named goals, locked plans with maturity dates, automated debits, milestones and a graduation path into a fund or portfolio.

SEC Registration Routes, in Plain Terms

Investment products in Nigeria are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) under the Investments and Securities Act and the SEC Rules and Regulations. One thing up front: Musskart is a software company — not a regulator, licensor, certification body or accredited capital market operator. We do not register you, sponsor an application or give legal advice. You obtain registration from the SEC, normally with a capital markets lawyer or compliance consultant; we build the technology you operate it on.

Fund manager / portfolio manager

For firms managing client money — a registered collective investment scheme or discretionary portfolios. Registration carries minimum capital, sponsored individual and fit-and-proper requirements, and a registered fund also needs a trustee and a custodian.

Broker / dealer and NGX dealing member

To execute trades in listed securities you must be, or route through, a dealing member of the Nigerian Exchange registered with the SEC. Most app-first businesses partner with an existing broker: the broker executes and clears, your platform owns onboarding, funding and reporting.

Sub-broker on a digital platform

The SEC has rules for sub-brokers serving clients through a digital platform, including sub-brokers under more than one broker — the common route for distributing other firms' products without a full broker licence. Capital and conduct requirements apply and are revised periodically, so confirm current thresholds with the SEC or your adviser rather than any figure quoted online, including here.

Investment adviser and robo-advice

If your app recommends what a client should hold rather than executing what they choose, you are in advisory territory — a registered function in its own right. In practice a licensed adviser or investment committee signs off the models, and the software applies them consistently and reproducibly.

Where banking licences come in

Deposits and payments are a different regulator and licence class under the Central Bank of Nigeria — see our guide to licence routes for a digital banking business in Nigeria, and fintech app development in Nigeria for wallets, payments and lending.

Alongside SEC registration you carry anti-money-laundering obligations — due diligence, sanctions and PEP screening, suspicious transaction reporting to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit — and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. Both are cheaper to build in than to retrofit.

The Partners Your Platform Has to Plug Into

Money, securities and identity live with third parties. You bring the relationships; we build each as a swappable integration.

What We Build — Module by Module

Every platform is assembled from the same core, then shaped to your product. Launch the regulated essentials first and add channels later.

1. Onboarding, KYC and risk profiling

Phone and email verification, BVN and NIN checks, ID capture with liveness, bank and next-of-kin details, source-of-funds questions, screening, and a suitability questionnaire that decides what the client is offered.

2. Wallet and double-entry ledger

Naira and dollar wallets, funding, withdrawals, fees, dividends and coupons all post to an immutable double-entry ledger. Balances are derived, never typed, and every movement references the instruction that caused it.

3. Order, subscription and redemption engine

Buy, sell, subscribe, redeem and rollover instructions validated against balances, minimums, tenors, dealing days and market hours. Instructions queue safely, retry idempotently and never double-execute.

4. Portfolio and valuation engine

Holdings, cost basis, realised and unrealised gains, accrued interest, dividend history, returns and allocation charts. Daily valuation jobs price every position and store history, so a client's chart is reproducible months later.

5. Automation — plans, debits and rebalancing

Recurring contributions, goal plans with lock and maturity dates, automatic rollovers, dividend reinvestment, drift monitoring and scheduled rebalancing — each action logged with its trigger.

6. Statements and client reporting

Contract notes, monthly and on-demand statements and annual summaries, branded and generated server-side, archived and retrievable years later for a lender, an accountant or an auditor.

7. Compliance, AML and audit

Transaction monitoring rules, case management for alerts, customer risk ratings and re-screening, an immutable audit log of every staff action, role-based access, maker-checker approvals and exports for audit and regulatory returns.

8. Back office and admin console

Client search, KYC review queues, manual instructions, fee and product administration, reconciliation dashboards, payout approvals, and reporting on inflows, redemptions and assets under management.

Security — Because You Are Holding People's Savings

An investing app is a target from launch day, so security is designed in, not bolted on.

What an Investment App Costs in Nigeria

Musskart investment and wealth platforms run from ₦8,000,000 to ₦40,000,000. The spread is driven by asset classes, partner integrations, dollar assets, and how much back-office and compliance tooling your licence requires. Every engagement is quoted on a written scope.

Focused MVP

₦8M – ₦14M

One asset class — typically mutual funds or Treasury bills. Onboarding and KYC, Naira wallet and ledger, subscription and redemption, portfolio view, statements, admin console, one mobile platform plus web.

Full Retail Platform

₦15M – ₦26M

Multiple asset classes, dollar wallet and offshore assets, goal plans and recurring debits, robo-advisory portfolios, referrals, AML tooling, iOS and Android plus web.

Institution Grade

₦27M – ₦40M

Several custodian, broker and fund-manager integrations, adviser and relationship-manager portals, multi-entity or white-label deployment, deep reporting and maker-checker workflows.

Budget separately for running costs: KYC checks, payment processing, market or fund data, hosting, messaging and a maintenance retainer. We set these out line by line in your proposal — see our full pricing page for how we price every service.

Timeline — How the Project Runs

A single-asset MVP takes roughly 12 to 16 weeks; a full multi-asset platform 20 to 30 weeks. Partner onboarding runs in parallel from week one, because that — not development — is what usually delays launches.

Weeks 1–2 — Product and compliance discovery

We map products, fees, dealing rules, limits and reporting obligations with your investment, operations and compliance people. Output: a signed scope, integration list and fixed price.

Weeks 2–4 — Architecture, ledger design and UX

Ledger and instrument model, security architecture, environments and clickable designs — approved before production code is written.

Weeks 4–12 — Core build

Onboarding, wallet and ledger, order engine, portfolio and valuation, statements and admin console, in two-week sprints you review in a working environment rather than in slides.

Weeks 8–16 — Integrations and automation

Payments, KYC vendor, broker or fund manager, custodian reconciliation, offshore partner, recurring debits and rebalancing — sandbox first, then production credentials as each partner approves you.

Final 3–4 weeks — Hardening, UAT and launch

Security and load testing, reconciliation dry runs, operations training, app store submissions and a phased launch starting with staff and a pilot cohort.

After launch — Support and iteration

A retainer covering monitoring, incident response, partner API changes, regulatory updates and a monthly roadmap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Between ₦8,000,000 and ₦40,000,000 depending on scope. A focused MVP — onboarding and KYC, a Naira wallet, one asset class such as mutual funds or Treasury bills, statements and an admin console — is ₦8M to ₦14M. A full multi-asset platform with dollar investing, a portfolio engine and rebalancing runs ₦15M to ₦26M; institution-grade builds reach ₦27M to ₦40M. Send your scope on WhatsApp for a fixed quote.

It depends on what the app does, and you obtain the licence from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), not from your developer. Distributing other firms' products digitally usually means registering as a sub-broker on a digital platform; managing client money or running a fund means registering as a fund or portfolio manager; trading listed shares requires an NGX dealing member. Musskart builds the technology, your capital markets lawyer confirms the route.

Yes — those products are the reference architecture for most briefs we receive. They share onboarding and KYC, a funding wallet, an order engine that routes money to a licensed partner, a portfolio engine that prices holdings daily, and statements. We build all of that as your own branded platform; the licence and the underlying products come from your SEC registration and partner agreements.

A single-asset MVP takes about 12 to 16 weeks from signed scope to launch; a full multi-asset platform with dollar investing, recurring debits, robo-advisory and back-office tooling takes about 20 to 30 weeks. Third parties usually set the pace rather than code — KYC vendor contracts, custodian and broker onboarding, payment approvals — so we start those conversations in week one.

Every Naira and every unit moves through a double-entry ledger, so a balance is the sum of immutable entries rather than an editable number — traceable to a funding, an order, a fee, a dividend or a withdrawal. Client funds sit with your custodian or partner bank as regulation and your agreements require, and the platform reconciles daily against bank statements, custodian positions and unit registers, flagging breaks before customers notice.

Yes. For dollar assets we integrate the licensed offshore broker-dealer or asset manager you contract with — FX display, dollar wallets, funding, settlement — and keep local and foreign holdings in one portfolio view. For robo-advisory we build the risk questionnaire, map users to model portfolios and automate contributions and rebalancing, with the investment logic signed off by your licensed adviser and a full audit trail.
