Insurance Software Built for How Nigerian Insurers Actually Work
Most insurance operations in Nigeria run on a policy register in Excel, a claims file in a shared folder, a WhatsApp group where brokers send business, and a finance team reconciling all three every month-end. It works until volume arrives. Then renewals get missed, commissions get disputed, claims sit unacknowledged, and nobody can answer a simple question — how much premium did we write on motor last quarter, and what is still outstanding?
Musskart Technology Limited builds the software that replaces that. We are a registered Nigerian software company headquartered in Asaba, with 250+ projects delivered since 2020. This page covers insurance software for non-health lines — motor, life, travel, general and micro-insurance — spanning policy administration, quoting and underwriting, premium collection, claims from first notification to settlement, broker and agent portals, and the reporting behind your regulatory returns.
One thing to be clear about before anything else. Musskart builds technology. We are not a regulator, a licensor or an accredited body. The NAICOM licence, the underwriting authority and the compliance sign-off are yours — we build the system that makes operating under them practical. If you are looking for health cover and HMO administration instead, that is a different build with different rules, and we have a dedicated page for it: HMO and health insurance software in Nigeria.
Who We Build For
Four kinds of buyers commission this work, and the shape of the system changes for each.
Licensed insurers
You underwrite your own risk and need a core system: multi-product policy administration, an underwriting rules engine, claims reserving and settlement, reinsurance and treaty tracking, and a reporting layer your compliance officer can pull returns from without begging IT.
Brokers and agencies
You place risk with several insurers. You need one client and policy register across all of them, renewal alerts that fire early enough to matter, quote comparison, and above all a commission ledger that shows exactly what each insurer owes you and what you have received.
Insurtech founders
You are selling cover direct through an app or embedding it in someone else's checkout. You need instant quotes, card and transfer payments, digital certificates issued in seconds, and a claims flow a customer can complete from their phone with photos.
Micro-insurance and mass-market distributors
You are selling small premiums at high volume through cooperatives, associations, agents or a mobile channel. Your system must handle thousands of low-value policies, tiny recurring premiums, group enrolment and a claims process cheap enough to be worth running.
Policy Administration Across Every Line You Sell
The policy record is the spine of the whole system. Everything else — premium, claim, commission, return — hangs off it. We model each product with its own rating factors, cover options, documents and renewal behaviour, while keeping one shared policy lifecycle so your team learns one system, not five.
Motor
Third-party and comprehensive, with vehicle, chassis, engine and registration data captured at quote. Certificate generation, fleet policies with per-vehicle schedules, and endorsements when a vehicle is added, swapped or removed mid-term.
Life and endowment
Beneficiary records, premium schedules, lapse and reinstatement rules, surrender values where applicable, and maturity tracking. Group life for employers with a member schedule that HR can update without emailing you a spreadsheet.
Travel
Trip dates, destination zones, traveller ages and cover tiers driving the price. Instant certificate issue for visa applications, multi-traveller policies on one booking, and automatic expiry at end of trip.
General and micro-insurance
Fire and special perils, goods in transit, householder, marine, personal accident, and small-ticket micro-insurance products sold in volume with simplified underwriting and group enrolment through cooperatives or associations.
Across every line the lifecycle is the same and it is fully audited: quote, underwrite, issue, endorse, renew, cancel, refund. Every state change records who did it, when, and why — which is exactly what an auditor asks for and exactly what a spreadsheet cannot tell you.
Quoting and Underwriting Rules That You Control
The single biggest complaint about off-the-shelf insurance systems in Nigeria is that changing a rate means raising a support ticket and waiting. We build the rating and underwriting logic as configuration your own team edits, not code we have to redeploy.
Rating factors you define
Sum insured, vehicle value and age, occupation class, location, trip length, traveller age band, claims history — whatever drives your price. Set base rates, loadings, discounts and minimum premiums per product, and change them without calling us.
Straight-through vs referral
Rules decide what is auto-accepted and what stops for a human underwriter. A ₦2m motor comprehensive quote can bind instantly; anything above your threshold, or with a declined-risk flag, routes to an underwriter queue with the reason attached.
Quote versioning and audit
Every quote is stored with the exact rates and rules that produced it. When a client argues about a price six months later, you can show precisely what was quoted, by whom, on which version of the rate table.
Multi-channel quoting
The same rating engine serves your internal team, your broker portal, your customer app and — through an API — any partner embedding your cover in their own checkout. One set of rules, one price, no drift between channels.
Premium Collection That Reconciles Itself
Money is where most insurance systems in Nigeria quietly fall apart. Premium arrives by transfer with no reference, or by card through a gateway nobody has linked to the policy record, and finance spends days matching payments to policies by hand.
We integrate Paystack and Flutterwave so the payment and the policy are the same event. Card, bank transfer and USSD all resolve back to a policy reference. Webhooks confirm settlement, the policy activates automatically, and the certificate is issued the moment funds clear — not the next morning when someone checks the account.
Instalments and recurring premium
Monthly, quarterly or termly premium schedules with automated recurring charges, retry logic on failed debits, and grace-period handling before a policy lapses. Essential for micro-insurance and life.
Dedicated virtual accounts
A unique account number per client or per policy so a bank transfer reconciles itself the second it lands. This one feature usually removes most of a finance team's manual matching.
Renewal and lapse notices
Automated SMS, WhatsApp and email reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before expiry, with a payment link in the message. Renewal rates rise simply because somebody was actually reminded.
Receipts and premium ledger
Every naira received is posted against a policy with a receipt the client can download. Finance sees written premium, collected premium and outstanding debit balance per client, per broker, per class.
Claims: From First Notification to Settlement
Claims is where your brand is made or destroyed. A customer who waits three weeks for an acknowledgement tells everybody. We build the whole path as one tracked workflow with a clock on every stage.
1. First notification of loss (FNOL)
Reported from the customer app, the agent portal, your call centre or a WhatsApp intake. Photos, documents, police reports and location are attached at the point of notification, so the file starts complete instead of half-empty.
2. Registration and validation
The system checks the policy was in force on the loss date, the cover applies, premium is not in arrears, and the claim is within the notification window. Anything failing those checks is flagged before an adjuster wastes a day on it.
3. Assignment and assessment
Route to an in-house adjuster, a loss adjuster or a garage panel, with the assessment report, photographs and repair estimates uploaded straight into the claim file. Service-level timers show what is overdue.
4. Reserving and approval
Set and revise the outstanding reserve as the claim develops. Approval limits by role mean a supervisor signs off within their authority and anything above it escalates automatically, with the full trail recorded.
5. Settlement and discharge
Payment initiated to the claimant, garage or beneficiary, discharge voucher generated, recoveries and salvage tracked, and the claim closed with paid and incurred figures feeding straight into your reporting.
Throughout, the customer sees status updates rather than silence, and management sees claims ratio, average settlement time and open claims by age.
Broker and Agent Portals With Commission Tracking
If you distribute through brokers or agents, this is usually the module that pays for the project. Give your channel a portal and business stops arriving as WhatsApp screenshots.
Each broker or agent logs in to their own workspace: they quote from your live rates, submit business, upload client documents, track policies they have placed, see renewals coming up, and — most importantly — see their commission statement. Earned, accrued, paid, outstanding, with the policies behind each figure. Commission disputes largely disappear when both sides look at the same ledger.
We support tiered commission structures, overrides for team leaders and sub-agents, per-product and per-insurer rates, and clawback on mid-term cancellation. Agent hierarchies let a general agent see their downline's production without seeing another agent's book.
Regulatory Returns and Compliance Reporting
Every licensed operator has to report, and the pain is never the reporting itself — it is assembling the numbers. When policies live in one spreadsheet, claims in another and premium in the bank statement, month-end becomes archaeology.
Because every policy, premium and claim in our systems is a structured record, the reporting layer simply reads them. We build the exports your compliance team needs: gross premium written by class, policies in force, claims incurred and paid, outstanding claims reserves, commission and acquisition costs, reinsurance ceded, and business analysed by channel and period — all reproducible, with the underlying policies listed if anyone asks.
An honest boundary: Musskart builds the reporting. We do not certify, approve, submit or file returns, and we are not a regulator, a licensor or an accredited body. Your compliance officer reviews and submits; obtaining and maintaining the NAICOM licence is entirely the client's responsibility. What we remove is the manual assembly, not the accountability.
Customer Self-Service App
The cheapest customer service is the customer serving themselves. We build the policyholder app — Flutter or React Native, so one codebase ships to Android and iOS — around the handful of things people actually open an insurance app to do.
Buy and renew
Get a quote, pay by card or transfer, and receive the digital certificate immediately. Renew an expiring policy in two taps from the reminder notification.
Policy wallet
All active and past policies, certificates and receipts in one place, downloadable as PDF. No more calling the office to ask someone to email a certificate.
Report a claim
Notify a loss with photos and location from the scene, then track the claim's status through to settlement without phoning anyone for an update.
Integrations That Matter in the Nigerian Market
An insurance platform is only as useful as what it connects to. The integrations we are asked for most often:
NIID for motor verification
The Nigerian Insurance Industry Database is the industry register used to verify motor certificates. Access is arranged between the licensed insurer and the database operator; once you hold it, we wire submission and lookup into policy issue so certificates are pushed automatically and results are stored on the policy.
Payments and payouts
Paystack and Flutterwave for collection, virtual accounts for transfer reconciliation, and bank payout rails for claim settlements and commission disbursement.
Identity and KYC
NIN and BVN verification where your onboarding rules require it, plus document capture and liveness checks for higher-value products.
Messaging and accounting
SMS, WhatsApp Business API and email for reminders and claim updates, plus exports or direct integration into the accounting package your finance team already runs.
If you already run a core system and only need one piece — a customer app on top, a broker portal beside it, or a reporting layer that reads from it — we build against your existing APIs rather than insisting you replace everything. What It Costs in Nigeria
Insurance builds we quote generally land between ₦3M and ₦25M. Where you sit depends on how many products you sell, how complex your underwriting is, and how many external systems we integrate.
Broker / Agency System
₦3M – ₦6M
Client and policy register across insurers, renewals and reminders, document store, commission ledger and production reporting. The fastest way off spreadsheets.
Core Policy & Claims
₦7M – ₦14M
Policy administration for one or two lines, rating and underwriting rules, premium collection with gateway integration, full claims workflow and management reporting.
Full Insurtech Platform
₦15M – ₦25M
Multi-line policy admin, rules-driven quote engine, customer app on Android and iOS, broker and agent portals, payment and identity integrations, regulatory reporting and an API for partners.
Those bands cover design, build, testing, deployment and handover. Ongoing hosting, gateway fees and support are separate and quoted plainly. For how we price work across all our services, see our full pricing page — or send your product list on WhatsApp and we will scope it against your actual requirements rather than a generic estimate.
How Long It Takes
We work in two-week cycles and put a working environment in front of you from about week three, so you test real screens with your own product data instead of waiting months for a reveal.
Weeks 1–2 — Discovery and product modelling
We sit with your underwriting, operations and finance people and map every product, rating factor, document, approval limit and report you need. You get a written scope and a fixed price before any code is written.
Weeks 3–8 — Core build
Policy administration, rating and underwriting rules, premium collection and the payment integration. You log in and test with your own rates while we are still building.
Weeks 9–16 — Claims, portals and reporting
Claims workflow end to end, broker and agent portals with commission, customer app if in scope, and the reporting layer behind your returns.
Final weeks — Data migration, training and go-live
We migrate your existing policy and client records, train your team, run parallel for a period if you want the safety, then go live. Support and maintenance continue after launch.
In practice: 8–12 weeks for a broker system, 14–20 weeks for core policy and claims on one line, and 5–8 months for a full multi-line platform with apps and portals.
